Focusing - a body based listening practice that fosters self compassion, connection and change

Michelle is a talented woman. Whether it’s the technique, or simply Michelle’s magic, I can’t say. What I can say is several sessions with Michelle has changed me. Revived me. I’ve found facets of me I’d lost, and others I didn’t know were there waiting. In every way, every aspect of my life, I have capacity and connection that I didn’t have the energy, or desire for, prior. Thank you Michelle for guiding me back to living and being in the driver’s seat. It’s been profound. I’m transformed

I had the privilege of having a Focusing session with Michelle. It was very relaxing and I felt very supported by her. She allowed for my body’s intuition to go on a beautiful and moving journey to help me resolve some issues. This process helped me release something that was not serving me, making me feel frustrated and holding me back. Once that issue was cleared, I felt deep peace and surrender. I cannot recommend this work enough.

  • Our body is like a house, it stores our emotions, desires, past experiences, traumas, hopes and dreams. The practice of Focusing is a SOMATIC PROCESS of TUNING IN and LISTENING DEEPLY to a feeling that comes from the body but is not yet able to be put into words. It gives you the OPPORTUNITY to SENSE INTO your body’s FELT EXPERIENCE of a situation, which can help you PROCESS YOUR FEELINGS and MAKE MEANING of an experience.

You will be invited to be CURIOUS about and BRING AWARENESS to your BODY’S FELT SENSE. The simple act of PAYING INWARD ATTENTION elicits a CHANGE process which can be likened to WITNESSING how you FEEL about a SITUATION, bringing about a sense of PEACE or RELIEF.

Your body’s felt sense carries a wealth of knowledge. It can feel like a VISCERAL SENSATION, it can have an EMOTIONAL element, may correspond to an IMAGE and may contain MEANING. It’s like LEARNING the LANGUAGE that comes from the BODY and WITNESSING the STORY that lives within you GENTLY UNFOLD before your very eyes, MOMENT to MOMENT.

The process of Focusing was discovered as a result of RESEARCH conducted by EUGENE GENDLIN, a student of CARL ROGERS, who was curious as to why some people have BETTER THERAPEUTIC OUTCOMES than others. Focusing is a somatic therapy that can be used as part of the psychotherapeutic process, and as a stand alone modality.

    • People looking to learn a PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT tool that can assist you NAVIGATE times of UNCERTAINTY and CHANGE

    • If you are feeling CREATIVELY STIFLED and wanting to RECONNECT with your MOJO

    • Those who are currently working with a talk therapist and you would like to learn a way of including your body as part of the healing process (don’t worry, you won’t be asked to repeat your history)

  • You will be SAFELY and GENTLY GUIDED to PAUSE, come into RELATIONSHIP with and LISTEN to your body’s FELT SENSE, in a NON ANALYTICAL way, taking some TIME and SPACE to be PRESENT with what is being experienced by the body, MOMENT to MOMENT.

During a Focusing session you will learn HOW TO APPROACH all things that come, including WHAT FEELS UNCOMFORTABLE, noticing how touching into these feelings brings about the opportunity for the body to EXPERIENCE RELIEF and in turn, help to CALM the MIND and REGULATE YOUR EMOTIONS by witnessing what needs to be heard.

Focusing can help you GROW YOUR CAPACITY to FEEL SAFE, fostering a nurturing and compassionate relationship with yourself.

Australian Bush Flower Essences can be used in conjunction with Inner Relationship Focusing to support your process.

In the words of Eugene Gendlin (1990)

“I want to start with the most important thing I have to say: The essence of working with another person is to be present as a living being. And that is lucky, because if we had to be smart, or good, or mature, or wise, then we would probably be in trouble. But, what matters is not that. What matters is to be a human being with another human being...”
