How can vagus nerve regulation help in the school system?

YOUNG PEOPLE DO NOT HAVE THE ABILITY TO SELF REGULATE, and need some support to manage feelings, thoughts and behaviours that can send them into a spin when they feel unsafe. THEY RELY ON THE ADULTS AROUND THEM to provide a SAFE ENVIRONMENT to help them CO-REGULATE.

Being in a state of DYSREGULATION means that it’s HARDER TO LEARN and take in information, as the emotional brain is flooded with stress hormones, causing our LOGICAL BRAIN to go OFFLINE. Neuroscience research indicates that ENGAGING THE VAGUS NERVE can elicit a regulatory effect on our nervous system, helping us to GROW OUR CAPACITY TO FEEL SAFE in our system, RESTORING COGNITIVE FUNCTION and fostering IMPROVED RELATIONSHIP outcomes.

Benefits of vagus nerve regulation include:

  • Helps one to KEEP CALM and BETTER MANAGE STRESS

  • EASY exercises that can help to MANAGE difficult FEELINGS or BEHAVIOURS

  • Invites in a PAUSE and helps foster CONNECTION to ourselves and to others

  • Feeling MORE EMOTIONALLY RESILIENT in the face of a challenge

  • Appeases the emotional brain, allowing the LOGICAL BRAIN to come back online

  • Helps with IMPROVED LEARNING outcomes

  • Fosters ENHANCED CONCENTRATION and FOCUS

  • BETTER able to LISTEN and take in information

  • Fosters IMPROVED RELATIONSHIPS

What is the role of the vagus nerve?

The VAGUS NERVE plays a KEY role in keeping us REGULATED and BALANCED. When our nervous system experiences a CHALLENGE, real or perceived, our VAGUS NERVE ALERTS our system that WE NEED TO ACT in order TO OVERCOME the situation we are faced with. We will REACT in ways that are BELOW OUR CONSCIOUS AWARENESS in a bid to NAVIGATE our way BACK TO SAFETY. Having the TOOLS to SELF REGULATE are fundamental in being able to PAUSE, SLOW DOWN and RECOVER from a challenge once it is safe to do so.

The work with you was amazing and I thank you for teaching me the simple and effective techniques to reset my vagus nerve. When I commenced working with you I felt fatigued and everything was an effort as I had been in overdrive. Over the 6 weeks of your program I transitioned from living in my head to being more in touch with my body and having more energy. Daily activities came with ease rather than a struggle. My brain fog lifted too. I continue to practice and use the techniques daily as they are a vital part of my tool kit. Thank you for creating a safe space and sharing your knowledge.
